Charity Sewing

At the meeting at the WLU, I was introduced to Jill Brown of Safe Voices, formally the AWAP, located in Auburn . She spoke about their organization and the need for support from our community. Without going into details, she mentioned they have a "wish list" for urgently needed items for their homes. Thinking of something personal, Jill told me that they have a ditty bag full of personal toiletries on the pillow of both women and children. The kids are also given a stuffed animal and a book. Most of these women and children come into the shelter with just the clothes on their backs, so their needs are great.

Wanting to do something sewing related, a light bulb went off! The Hot Dog pillowcases is perfect for a quick and easy way to brighten up the stark bedding and this is something they can bring with them when they are placed in more permanent housing. It only takes 1 yd. of 44" (WOF) cotton fabric for the main pillowcase, 1/4 yd. for the cuff and the optional trim is less than 1/8". Most of you probably have the fabric in your stash. And this will be one of the demonstrations done at the April 9th workshop. If you cannot attend or want more information, please contact me.

I do, however, want to be clear this isn't a Classic Quilters project, but an individual one. I have personally made quilt blocks for all the quilting charities listed and many more for websites I haven't posted yet. I do invite you to check out this and the other charity websites nationwide located in the "Favorite Links" area on the left-side of the blog about halfway down the page.

While they would all love a finished quilt, a block or two is always welcome! You might even want to dig out all those sample or UFO blocks sitting in your closet and donate them. Spring cleaning, ladies!
