During our workshop today, several items were discussed and here are the responses:
The "Strip Twist" pattern can be found at http://quiltville.com/striptwistpf.html
The first block pattern is "Woven Ribbons"

The second block pattern is "Louisiana"

In reference to Janney's question on cleaning the soleplate of your iron, I found these directions online:
http://www.doityourself.com/stry/cleaniron
Warning! Check your own owner's manual for specific directions! My new iron says NOT to use the vinegar at all. Personally, I purchased a Rowenta soleplate cleaning kit when I got my Rowenta iron at JA's. I too had a nasty build up of starch and this kit worked like a charm! A good use for your next 40%
I also mentioned that I found a recipe for a substitute for Mary Ellen's Best Press solution. Be aware that I haven't tested it yet, but it is from a reliable source. Great for those of you who already have the vodka (wink, wink, J!)
2 cups distilled water
2 oz cheap vodka
6-12 drops of 100% pure essential oil (lavender, rose or leave it unscented). You can find these oils at your local health food store
1/3 cup of liquid Starch (available at Walmart)
Shake well to mix all ingredients and be sure to shake well before each use.
Another recipe that I do use everyday is a Febreeze spray knock-off. I saved the spray bottle and came up with the following substitute:
25 ounces distilled water
4 tablespoons Downy Clean Breeze liquid fabric softener (no other brand has been tested, but feel free to try other brands out).
Please note you should NOT use another type of spray bottle, such as a clean Windex bottle for this mixture. You can purchase a new spray bottle in the cleaning or lawn and garden department to use. It needs a fine spray in order to work well, so this is why the Febreeze bottle is perfect for the mixture. Be sure to test a hidden area of the item before spraying the entire piece. I recommend you do not use tinted fabric softeners for this mixture, such as the darker blue shades, especially if you are spraying on lighter fabrics. For those of you who do not want scents, use unscented fabric softener for your mixture.
