Future of Maine Quilts

FUTURE OF MQ ???

Volunteers - Lots of discussion. Consensus is that PTQG membership is aging. As such those who used to participate and even some of them still actively involved, cannot do certain jobs (i.e. Climb ladders). Also, QSA (Quilt Show Advisory) believes we already do enough to “pay” those volunteers who do step forward. However, since only 10% to 12% of the current 2328

PTQG members actually volunteer...SOMETHING has to happen. (See below)

Long term plans for Maine Quilts (beyond 2013) - Lots of discussion. It appears that the same 10% -12% that volunteer are also the same majority that take classes, enter quilts, chair events, etc... If we don’t get more volunteers, MQ as we know it may not exist!! As cost increase with teacher fees, transportation and baggage cost, per diem, ACC (Augusta Civic Center) increases, the more than $10K profit from MQ is very likely to decline. Especially if MQ wants to grow and become more “user-friendly” and cost effective by going green and having applications and registration done electronically. Membership has pretty much expressed that they won’t pay more so increasing fees of workshop and admission does not appear to be a solution.

Other less “involved” methods to raise money for PTQG could be achieved by raising PTQG membership dues by $5.00. It would easily make up the $10K needed by PTQG to operate. In addition, with the elimination of Maine Quilts, over $3000 of expenses would be eliminated from the PTQG budget (president and treasurer expenses to attend Maine Quilts, all of QSA expenses). There would be additional savings as the non-climate controlled storage unit would not be needed. And lastly, finding individuals willing to serve as president and treasurer might be easier as their duties and the time commitment would decrease considerably.

But more important, if PTQG/MQ does not get a commitment from its membership to volunteer and participate, there will be no bodies to work and make the show happen. So WHAT DO WE DO?? Is MQ 2013 our last quilt show? With ACC contract renewal and future teacher contracts/bookings to be done next year; this dilemma must be addressed now.

ACTION: PTQG Board to decide MQ future. Recommend a PWP (Patchwork Press) article to the whole membership expressing this problem. VOLUNTEER… GET ACTIVE…or MQ is GONE!
